Disadvantages of Dental Implants

There are two sides of a coin. While dental implants have many advantages and benefits, you should be aware of the disadvantages too. This will help you decide if you are a candidate for dental implant treatment.

 1.      Time taken:
Since the treatment of dental implants is like a natural process, it takes more time than a bridge, or a denture.

We have to wait for the bone to grow on the implants. This is known as osseointegration and this is the main advantage of implants. The implant acts like the root of a natural tooth, and is able to resist the heavy forces of chewing.

The time interval between placing of implants and making crown/bridge over the implant varies from case to case.

In selected cases there may be no waiting; sometimes we wait for a 1-3 months and in cases where we have done an advanced bone grafting procedure we may even need to wait for 6 months.

 2.      Dental Implant Treatment involves a surgical procedure:

Dental implants have to be placed in the jaw bone, that is why this is a surgical procedure. In some cases where there is lack of bone for the implant, some procedures for gaining bone such as sinus lift or bone grafting may be required.

However in most cases it is a very minor procedure, and some patients say that it was simpler than getting a tooth removed.

3.      Cost of Dental Implant Treatment:

Dental implant treatment is costlier compared to its alternatives such as a denture or a bridge. In the long run, dental implant treatment is better cost-effective because of its long life and other advantages such as preservation of adjacent teeth.

Dr Madan’s final comments: At our dental implant centre, we practice an open policy and like to inform about all disadvantages and possible risk factors so that you can take a better decision.
